A recent survey by the Design Council
has revealed a worrying attitude by West Midlands companies
to the role design can play in their success.
Sixty-five per cent of companies say design has either little
or no role to play in their business. This is worrying because,
as Design Council business director Harry Rich confirms, 'there
is a clear link between how much growth a company can deliver
and how much use it makes of design. The fastest growing businesses
tend to be those for whom design plays an important or even
crucial role.'
The figures don't lie: 71% of Britain's fastest growing businesses
say design is 'integral' to their operations, whereas 60% of
businesses who are effectively at a standstill say design has
'no role to play at all.'
